Caste Certificate: Validity & Renewal
How long does a caste certificate stay valid, and what to do when you need a fresh one.
How long is it valid?
- SC/ST certificates: generally valid for a lifetime and never need renewal.
- OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificates: not lifetime — income-linked, typically valid for one financial year only. Get a fresh one each year you need it.
- A few states print a validity period even on SC/ST certificates, and some institutions ask for a recently issued certificate regardless — check the specific requirement before you apply somewhere.
Renewal tips
- Check whether your certificate mentions an expiry date; most do not.
- If an institution asks for a 'recent' certificate, you can usually apply for a fresh one through the same process.
- Keep the original safe and use attested copies or the downloaded PDF for submissions.
🔍 How we verify information
We check every process step, fee and timeline against official sources before publishing: state e-District portals, the Bihar RTPS portal (serviceonline.bihar.gov.in), india.gov.in, and DoPT / Ministry of Social Justice notifications. Where we cannot confirm a detail from an official source, we mark it [VERIFY] rather than guess. Rules change — always confirm on the official portal before applying.

Apply fresh through the same online or offline process with updated documents. There is no separate 'renewal' form in most states — it is a new application.
